Electronic Paper Technology: Tomorrow’s Paper

What Is Electronic Paper?
Unlike LCD, LED, or CRT display system, electronic paper technology attempts to achieve the clarity, contrast, and ease of viewing of normal paper on an electronic display.

The technology behind electronic paper is thirty years old; it was developed at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center). Nicholas K. Sheridon of Xerox PARC created a new display technology known as Gyricon , which became the basis of the modern e-paper technology.

The ideal modern electronic paper should have high contrast like normal paper and low power consumption; it should be thin and light as well. The electronic paper display (EPD) is so light that it can be folded or curled, while still retaining the image. Also, the EPD should not lose the image even if power supply is not available. These concepts were used in the production of such products as Fabric PC from Fujitsu, which is a notebook computer utilizing electronic paper display; it is very lightweight and not easily damaged.

Electronic Ink Technology
At the forefront of electronic ink display technology are two companies: Ink Corporation of Cambridge, Massachusetts (recently acquired by Prime View International, Taiwan) and Xerox (through its subsidiary, Gyricon Media) of Palo Alto, California.

Electronic ink uses a type of clear liquid plastic with millions of microcapsules, which are tiny (at almost the diameter of one of our hairs) spherical objects. The microcapsules contain white-colored and black-colored chips. The white chips are positively charged and black chips are negatively charged. This electronic ink is coated on to an ultra-thin plastic sheet containing a tiny printed circuit board. This circuit can selectively send positive and negative charges to the pasted e-ink, making the chips move, thus altering the display.

Electronic Paper: The Future
 Businesswire recently reported that the electronic reading devices will have an increase in production from 1.1 million units in 2008 to 20 million units in 2012. The cumulative annual growth rate, according to iSuppli analyst Vinita Jakhanwal, is around 105 per cent.

The development of electronic paper technology quickened as the public became fond of the new e-book reading gadgets. The Oprah Winfrey Show endorsed Amazon Kindle, and Oprah called it as her favorite gadget, making Kindle very popular among book readers. E Ink Corporation and Prime View International together support about 20 e-book device manufacturers, including Amazon and Sony. According to Digital Book Readers, introducing e-ink technology into home use, school curriculum, library facilities, and business use provides a win-win scenario with benefits to be had at all angles.

The biggest drawback of computer display is that it is not remotely as readable as paper; it is too bright and can strain your eyes. This is the reason why people still prefer printed paper. On the other hand, electronic paper looks exactly like paper. The technology will drastically change the way people will be reading books. You can have small handheld readers with hundreds and thousands of books, readable as exactly as a normal printed book.

Tomorrow our books will never be damaged. Once the readers become universal, traditional printing will be history. You can download the books you purchase directly to your reader, and that can fetch you huge savings in time and money. The delivery of newspaper and magazines will also be in a new way electronically.
The electronic ink is not just printable on plastic panels, but it can be printed on normal walls, your tee shirts, tablecloth, and pretty much any surface. Thus, in the future you can change your wallpaper at the click of a button.

Electronic Arts reveal their best-selling games of 2009-10

Giant video gaming publisher Electronic Arts have revealed that their best-selling titles of the past year were the military shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2, soccer game FIFA 10, American football title Madden NFL 10, motorsport experience Need for Speed: Shift, and social simulation The Sims 3.


FIFA 10 shifted more than 10 million units since its launch in October 2009, significant as EA faces stiff competition in the soccer sector from Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series.

Bad Company 2 sold more than 5 million between March 2 and 31, a strong showing considering that rival genre-dominating game Modern Warfare 2 sold an estimated 10 million in the four months following its November 2009 launch, according to market researchers at the NPD Group.

Specific figures for the other three were not given, but each game in the top five sold at least 4 million first-hand copies between April 1, 2009, and March 31, 2010; the dates marking the beginning and end of EA's Financial Year 2010.

Lifetime sales for The Sims 3 stand at at least 6 million since June 2009.

The inclusion of American football game Madden NFL 10 comes after an initially disappointing performance when it sold nearly 0.5 million less than the previous year's equivalent in the month after its release.

Need for Speed: Shift was released in September 2009 rather than the more favorable November window that the series usually aims for, but its positive critical reception represented a turnaround for the aging series, and it didn't do too badly at retail either.

How to create a new torrent file using uTorrent

Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Nokia broadens legal battle vs Apple, includes iPad

Nokia, the world's top handset maker, broadened its patent battle against Apple on Friday to include the iPad, deepening the legal battle between the two smartphone rivals.

Nokia said it had filed a complaint in the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, alleging that Apple's iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe five important Nokia patents.

The patents have not been covered in Nokia's previous actions against Apple. The two are in the midst of a major legal battle, which started last October when Nokia charged Apple for using its patented technologies without paying for them.

"The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space," Nokia said.

"These patented innovations are important to Nokia's success as they allow improved product performance and design," it said.

BlackBerry 'was first predicted 100 years ago'

BlackBerry, the leading smartphone device, had been predicted a century ago by an American physicist, it has been claimed.

Nikola Tesla made the prediction about the portable messaging service way back in 1909 in the Popular Mechanics magazine.

In the mag, he wrote that one day it would be possible to transmit wireless messages all over the world. He also predicted that the hand-held device would be simple to operate and one day, everyone in the world would communicate to friends using it.

The physicist believed that this would usher in a new era of technology.

The magazine's technology editor, Seth Porges, unveiled Tesla's prediction at a presentation to industry figures recently in New York. It was titled "108 years of futurism".

The magazine, published in January 1902, has nine international editions and a readership of millions today, and has always tried to anticipate the world of technology in the future.

"Nikola Tesla was able to predict technology which is still in its nascent forms a hundred years later," The Telegraph quoted Porges as saying.

"He talked a lot about his other great passion, which was wireless power.

"It has taken a little longer to get off the ground, but work on fascinating wireless conductive transmission is going on right now in research centres at MIT and Intel and other places," Porges added.

Nokia, Microsoft launch new mobile software

Nokia and Microsoft unveiled on Wednesday the first result of their new software collaboration aimed at breaking the dominance of Research in Motion's BlackBerry in wireless services for corporations.

Nokia and Microsoft, at one time fierce rivals in the mobile telecommunications business, announced the alliance in August 2009. They expect to offer Nokia phones running Microsoft's Office programmes later this year.

On Wednesday the companies unveiled Communicator Mobile software, which enables people to see their colleagues' availability, and click to communicate with them using instant messanger, e-mail, text or phone call.

The names and status of colleagues are embedded directly in the devices' contacts application. Owners of Nokia E52 and E72 models can download it as of today from Nokia's Ovi Store.

Now, nano-based technology that can make PCs, net hundreds of times faster

Communication devices will soon turn smaller, more flexible and more powerful, thanks to a nano-based technology that can make computers and the Internet hundreds of times faster.

Currently being created by Dr. Koby Scheuer of Tel Aviv University's School of Electrical Engineering, the communications technology "enabler" could only be used in five or ten years in the future.

Scheuer has developed a new plastic-based technology for the nano-photonics market, which manufactures optical devices and components.

The plastic-based "filter" is made from nanometer-sized grooves embedded into the plastic.

When used in fibre optics cable switches, the new device will make our communication devices smaller, more flexible and more powerful, he said.

"Once Americans have a fibre optics cable coming into every home, all communication will go through it - telephone, cable TV, the Internet. But to avoid bottlenecks of information, we need to separate the information coming through into different channels. Our polymeric devices can do that in the optical domain - at a speed, quality and cost that the semi-conductor industry can't even imagine," said Scheuer.

Every optical device used in today's communication tools has a filter.

Ten years from now, fibre optic cables that now run from city to city will feed directly into every individual home.

When that technology comes to light, the new plastic-based switches could revolutionize the way we communicate.

"Right now, we could transmit all of the written text of the world though a single fiber in a fiber optics cable in just a few seconds. But in order to handle these massive amounts of communication data, we need filters to make sense of the incoming information. Ours uses a plastic-based switch, replacing hard-to-fabricate and expensive semi-conductors," said Scheuer.

Semi-conductors, grown on crystals in sterile labs and processed in special ovens, take days and sometimes months to manufacture. They are delicate and inflexible as well, said Scheuer.

"Our plastic polymer switches come in an easy-to-work-with liquid solution. Using a method called 'stamping,' almost any laboratory can make optical devices out of the silicon rubber mold we've developed," he added.

The silicon rubber mould is scored with nano-sized grooves, invisible to the eye and each less than a millionth of a meter in width.

A plastic solution can be poured over the mould to replicate the optical switch in minutes.

When in place in a fibre-optic network, the grooves on the switch modulate light coming in through the cables, and the data is filtered and encoded into usable information.

The device can also be used in the gyros of planes, ships and rockets; inserted into cell phones; and made a part of flexible virtual reality gloves so doctors could "operate" on computer networks over large distances.

The study has been published in the journal Optics Express.
