Process Explorer v12.03

Introduction

Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you'll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you'll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

And what's a great use of this great software is that it can be used to trace down any virus in your computer and gives you the ability to delete it from your pc manually. How to do it:quite simple first install and open the process explorer ,then browse down under the tab explorer.exe as all the files(non-system) including any virus is shown under this section with a pink colour (note no virus can be above explorer.exe).Double click on any such suspicious file and goto the threads section to view it's threads ,note the locations carefully. Now close it and right-click on the file and select kill process tree(this kills all the processes under that suspicious file, this is important as many times on attempting to delete suspicious file,an error crops up saying file being used by another user etc.,as it is true coz you cannot delete a file while it's running, killing process tree forcefully shuts down the activity of the file) now go manually to all the locations written under the threads window as said above, and delete them to clean your computer from the virus .
